TIM KUYPERS, baritone

Often described as a rich, velvety and sonorous voice and praised for his strong stage presence and acting skills, the baritone Tim Kuypers has been a regular guest at Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich since he finished the Studio in 2013. He had the pleasure of singing under chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and sang roles like the Einäugige in “Die Frau ohne Schatten”, Haudy in “Die Soldaten”, created the role of Johanson in Srnka’s ‘South Pole’ and sang several roles in the world premiere of Jörg Widmann’s ‘Babylon’ with conductor Kent Nagano. Tim had the pleasure of working with Oksana Lyniv on Eddy in ‘Greek’ by Turnage for which he was awarded the Festspielpreis of the Bayerische Staatsoper and the role of Mittenhofer in “Elegie für junge Liebende” by Henze. Other roles include Marullo in (Rigoletto), Sonora in (La fanciulla del West), Short and the Obstreperous Prisoner in Janácek's 'From the house of the dead', Harašta in ‘The cunning little vixen’ and Mathieu in ‘Andrea Chenier’ with Omer Meir Wellber.

Next to that, Tim was a guest at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, in the Konzerthaus in Berlin, the Prinzregententheater in Munich, Théâtre de Champs Elysées in Paris, the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and several opera houses and concert venues throughout Germany, France, Italy, Austria and Estonia.

On the opera stage he sang with conductors like Marco Armiliato, Fabio Luisi, Zubin Mehta, Kirill Petrenko, Vladimir Jurowski, Mark Elder, Bertrand de Billy, Simone Young, Daniele Rustioni, Paolo Carignani, Kent Nagano, Ádám Fischer, Asher Fisch, Oksana Lyniv, Marc Piollet, Karina Canellakis, Pietro Rizzo, Emmanuel Villaume, Karl Mark Chichon, Omer Meir Wellber, Francesco Angelico to name a few and created roles with directors such as Richard Jones, Hans Neuenfels, Peter Konwitschny, Barrie Kosky, Krzysztof Warlikowski, Frank Castorf, Andreas Kriegenburg, Jürgen Rose, Philipp Stölzl, David Bösch, Carlus Padrissa/La Fura dels Baus and Christiane Pohle

His operatic repertoire also includes roles like Silvio (Pagliacci), Ping (Turandot), il conte d’Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), the title role in Rossini’s ‘Il signor Bruschino’, Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Vater (Hänsel und Gretel), Sid (Albert Herring), Belcore (Elisir d’amore), Von Wierhof (Semyon Kotko) and Pantalon (L’Amour des trois oranges) to name just a few.

Next to opera, Tim has a big passion for Lied. His repertoire spans from Schubert (Winterreise etc) up to Martin (Jedermann Monologe), all of Mahler’s song cycles, the oeuvre of Butterworth, Fauré’s ‘l’Horizon chimérique and so on.

He also has the pleasure of regularly performing concert works such as Mendelssohn’s ‘Elias’, Orff’s ‘Carmina Burana’, Brahms’ ‘Ein Deutsches Requiem’, the requiem masses by Fauré and Duruflé.

A few highlights from recent engagements are the role of Manz in ‘A village Romeo and Juliet’ by Delius with Sir Mark Elder and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Sonora in ‘la Fanciulla del West’ with director Andreas Dresen and conductors James Gaffigan and Daniele Rustioni as well as the Black-Party Minister in Ligeti’s ‘le Grand Macabre’ with James Gaffigan in Amsterdam.

Future engagements include Sonora in ‘La Fanciulla del West’ at the Bayerische Staatsoper with director Andreas Dresen and conductor Juraj Valcuha and Strojnik in the ‘Makropulos affair’ with Karina Canellakis and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in the Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Two new song programs are scheduled as well. ‘Sea Fever’ is a collaboration with pianist Maurice Lammerts van Bueren and tells the tales of longing to the sea. Next to that, a new song program called ‘Kirjad koju’ or ‘Letters to home’, with pianist Johan Randvere and actor Risto Vaidla which tells about written and composed stories and poetry of fallen soldiers and refugees.
