NACH OSTEN

Maria Valdmaa, soprano/sopraan

It is the 19th of October, 1814. Franz Schubert, a distracted teenager living in Vienna, has just passed his teacher exam. For two years he has been composing songs, and that night he completes yet another : Gretchen am Spinnrade. Perhaps he draws the double barlines last, perhaps he sings it through once again, wildly enacting the anguish of the female psyche, or perhaps he just finishes it in haste and hurries off to ... ? Being in such a great hurry, could he have known that this song would mark the birth of German romantic Lied?

But while listening carefully to Gretchen’s song, it is evident that the wheel had already begun spinning. Many 18th-century songs

were entitled simply ‘Gedichte’ for voice and piano. Gluck rocked the boat a little by declaring that music composed in mixed structural forms was ancillary to poetic expression. This idea was warmly received by the North German songwriters J.F. Reichardt, J.A.P. Schulz and C.F. Zelter, as well as the renowned Swabian ballad composer J.R. Zumsteeg. Herder fostered the influence of primitive, national or traditional verse of all kinds; and the resulting art born of this movement proudly resonated throughout the entire German-speaking region east of Berlin, all the way to the Russian border.

Reichardt, J.A.P.
